The UFC Heads Down Under With Australia’s Favourite Son

After a barnstorming return to the mainstream last Saturday, the UFC is running it back down under this weekend with UFC 325 from Sydney, Australia.

Headlining the event is one of the country’s greatest ever athletes, with Alexander Volkanovski defending his featherweight championship in a rematch with Diego Lopes, against whom he won the vacant belt last April.

After reclaiming the belt via unanimous decision in their first clash, Volkanovski enters the second bout with Lopes as a slim -140 favourite. The challenger, in his second attempt at becoming a UFC champion, comes back as a +120 underdog.

Helping lead the way into Saturday's main event will be Kiwi and UFC elder statesman Dan Hooker, who will enter the octagon as a considerable +255 underdog against -340 favourite Benoit Saint-Denis.

Hooker last fought in November, in a loss to Arman Tsarukyan, but prior to that had reeled off three straight victories. Saint-Denis, meanwhile, is on a three-fight win streak of his own, most recently knocking out Beneil Dariush inside 20 seconds last November.

The main event's greatest thrills may be found early in the card, however, with Australian Tai Tuivasa (+235) taking on Tallison Teixeira (-310) in a heavyweight brawl.

Tuivasa made a name for himself in an epic win over Derrick Lewis at UFC 271, but that fight—in February 2022—was his most recent win, with five consecutive losses since. Teixeira was stopped by Lewis in his most recent bout, last July, but that was his first and only professional loss to date. Across 31 fights, the pair have seen 24 knockouts.

With returning heroes, heavyweight hitters, and a championship belt on the line, UFC 325 promises plenty of action in its second fight card of the year.
