Pereira Seeks Redemption, Light Heavyweight Title at UFC 320
Just six short months ago, Alex Pereira was one of the UFC’s undisputed kings. The Brazilian had torn through the promotion’s best offerings with ruthless efficiency, as he defended his light heavyweight belt three times in six months.
That dominant run ended at UFC 313, when he lost a unanimous decision – and his belt – to Magomed Ankalaev, after being dominated for the better part of 25 minutes. On Saturday, at UFC 320, Pereira will get his chance at redemption against Ankalaev.
Though Ankalaev was the challenger a few short months ago, he's far from the underdog. Not only did the Dagestani fighter outwork Pereira the first time around, but he is unbeaten in his previous 13 fights.
Oddsmakers have given Ankalaev the respect of a champion, too, as he is a -280 favourite* with Pereira coming back at +210.
Adding to Saturday’s prestige is a second title fight, with bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili making his third title defense against challenger Cory Sandhagen. Though Sandhagen did contest the interim bantamweight title in 2021, this is his first shot at the undisputed belt – and the monumental challenge that looms Saturday is reflected in the odds.
The challenger comes in as a +290 underdog, with Dvalishvili coming back as a -400 favourite. With 13 of Dvalishvili's 15 UFC fights going the distance, a gruelling battle awaits; Saturday's co-main is -340 to go the distance and +225 to finish inside 25 minutes.
Though both challengers, Pereira and Sandhagen, face long odds to have their respective division’s belts change hands at UFC 320, it sets up a fight night rich with potential drama. Whether it’s redemption, a culmination, or simply continued domination from the current champions, Saturday night is set to deliver thrills.
