12 Years Later — The Riders Are Back for the Grey Cup
After field goals decided both the Eastern and Western Finals, the stage is set for a fantastic matchup in Sunday’s Grey Cup in Winnipeg.
The Montreal Alouettes, who escaped Hamilton with a 19-16 win on Saturday, return to the biggest stage for the second time in three years. There, they'll face the rabidly supported Saskatchewan Roughriders, who held off the visiting BC Lions in a 24-21 win to return to the Grey Cup for the first time in 12 years.
Though they were pushed right to the end by the Lions and CFL superstar Nathan Rourke, the Riders have ended up where many expected after a league-best 12-6 record in 2025. With a wave of Roughrider faithful expected in Winnipeg for the Grey Cup, Saskatchewan is a -3.5 favourite, and -170 outright, to win the Grey Cup and cap what has been its best season in over a decade.
The Als, at 10-8, nearly required the crossover to reach the postseason but did enough to stay out east and then navigated their way through the playoffs to make it to Winnipeg on the back of their duel-threat quarterback Davis Alexander.
In his first season as Montreal's starter, Alexander seamlessly replaced Cody Fajardo and capped it off with 274 total yards in the Eastern Final. Now, the 27-year-old will need his finest performance at the helm, with Montreal a 3.5-point underdog and +140 outright.
If these teams' regular season matchups are any indication, Sunday will be fascinatingly unpredictable. The first meeting, in early August, saw the Riders go to Montreal and hammer the Als 34-6. Just six weeks later, the Alouettes returned the favour, coming into Regina and storming out to a 28-10 half-time lead, and leaving a 48-31 winner.
With little to separate the two teams during the regular season, and just over a field goal line between them ahead of Sunday’s Grey Cup, the finale in the CFL is set to deliver the kind of fireworks Canadian football is famous for.
