Oilers Seek Revenge – And a Sixth Stanley Cup
In last season’s Stanley Cup Final, the Edmonton Oilers came oh-so-close to becoming the fifth team in NHL history to come back from a 3-0 series deficit. They clawed their way back to a Game 7, only to lose in crushing fashion at the hands of the Florida Panthers.
A year on from the Oilers’ Game 7 defeat, they have a chance to avenge that loss with a Stanley Cup Final rematch against these same Panthers. After cruising through the Western Conference bracket, confidence in Edmonton’s ability to finally break through – and end Canada’s Cup drought in the process – is high.
Ahead of Game 1, however, the thinnest of margins separate the two teams in the betting market. The Oilers are -115 to win the Stanley Cup*, with the Panthers coming back at -110. In terms of implied probability, that gives Edmonton a 53.49% chance, and Florida a 52.38% chance.
To start the series, home-ice advantage has tilted the odds just enough to shift early expectations. Now, it’s up to the Oilers to capitalize on that edge and strike first. And if Edmonton is going to take that step and finally break through after last season, it will likely be on the shoulders of captain Connor McDavid.
Amid the heartache of last year’s Game 7 loss, McDavid became the second player this century to win the Conn Smythe on the losing end of the Stanley Cup Final. McDavid could join an illustrious club of multiple-time Conn Smythe winners, as the +105 betting favourite to win the award this time around.
For McDavid and the Oilers – and, by extension, Canada as a whole – only one trophy matters. After 32 years, Edmonton is once again putting the Cup drought under threat. In a Stanley Cup Final rematch, it could finally put an end to the country’s long wait.
